Kuwait: In a groundbreaking medical milestone, the Ministry of Health has announced the country’s first successful surgical operation to treat severe atrophy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on both sides.

A team led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Kandari, maxillofacial surgeon at the Farwaniya Specialized Dental Center, carried out the delicate procedure with the support of the center’s maxillofacial surgery unit. The operation marks a qualitative leap in Kuwait’s maxillofacial surgery capabilities, thanks to the use of cutting-edge 3D virtual surgery technology.

This advanced technique allowed the team to precisely plan the procedure and design a custom-made prosthetic joint that matches the patient’s unique facial anatomy and functional needs.

The patient, a woman in her thirties, suffered from jaw asymmetry and severe TMJ atrophy, causing significant difficulty in mouth opening, chewing, speaking, and breathing.

The Ministry emphasized that this achievement demonstrates Kuwait’s progress in specialized healthcare and the competence of its medical professionals, who continue to perform complex operations to the highest international standards.
