Tensions continue to rise in Los Angeles as the Trump administration escalates its crackdown on illegal immigration. In large-scale raids conducted yesterday, federal agencies, supported by the National Guard, arrested nearly 400 people, including protesters. Reports indicate that 330 of them were detained for lacking valid documentation, while 157 were arrested on serious charges such as attempted assault on police officers and obstruction of justice.
Two youths were charged with throwing petrol bombs at law enforcement officers. Several journalists were also injured while covering the protests, according to the local Press Club.
To further bolster immigration enforcement, the Trump administration has deployed an additional 500 National Guard members, bringing the total to 4,000, along with 700 Marines. These forces are working alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the operations.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the raids, calling them provocative and harmful to public peace. At a special press conference, she stated that the situation was stable until the raids began, describing the current atmosphere as one of fear and panic.
The protests, which began last Saturday in the Paramount area of Los Angeles, have escalated significantly. With immigrants accounting for roughly one-third of the city’s population, the community has been at the center of the administration’s enforcement efforts. Last month alone, 239 undocumented individuals were arrested.
Following President Trump’s directive for ICE to detain at least 3,000 people daily, the intensified operations have sparked widespread outrage and civil unrest throughout the city.
