Dozens of Colombian Soldiers Held Hostage by Civilians in Drug-Conflict Zone

Bogota: In a troubling escalation of violence, dozens of Colombian soldiers have been taken hostage in the remote Micay Canyon area, underscoring persistent instability in one of the country’s most conflict-ridden regions.

According to the Colombian military, an initial group of 31 soldiers was detained by locals, followed by an additional 26 captured on Sunday by a crowd of more than 200 civilians. Military authorities suspect these civilians were coerced or manipulated by dissident groups from the former Farc rebel movement, which, despite a landmark peace accord in 2016, has fragmented into multiple armed factions.

Brigadier General Federico Alberto Mejia confirmed that the hostages include four non-commissioned officers and 53 soldiers, classifying the incident unequivocally as a kidnapping.

Reports suggest that the EMC faction — considered the most influential Farc splinter group — may have orchestrated the mass abductions, though the group has not publicly acknowledged involvement. Investigations are underway to confirm the extent of EMC’s role.

Micay Canyon is notorious as a hub for coca cultivation and drug trafficking, with its challenging terrain enabling smuggling networks to transport narcotics to Pacific ports for illegal export. This strategic importance has fueled ongoing clashes between security forces and criminal groups battling for control.

The Colombian military is currently negotiating for the soldiers’ release while maintaining operations in the area to prevent further incidents. Authorities emphasize that restoring order in Micay Canyon is crucial to national security and disrupting drug trafficking pipelines. Residents have been asked to stay alert and assist security forces by reporting any unusual activity as the situation unfolds.
