Beijing: Southern China has been hit with intense rain and strong winds as Typhoon Wipha weakened into a tropical storm while moving toward Vietnam. After battering Hong Kong with gusts up to 175 kilometers per hour — prompting the city’s highest hurricane warning since 2023 — Wipha moved inland, affecting Guangdong province cities like Yangjiang, Zhanjiang, and Maoming.
The storm has triggered alerts for flash floods and landslides, with heavy rain forecast to continue in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, and Fujian until July 22. After skirting Hong Kong and causing widespread disruptions — including grounded flights and damage from fallen trees and scaffolding — Wipha is expected to regain strength over the Gulf of Tonkin before reaching northern Vietnam’s coast.
Authorities have urged residents to stay cautious, as the risk of further floods and landslides remains high. Hong Kong and Macau have resumed normal activities, but cleanup efforts are still underway in some affected areas. Emergency teams remain on standby to respond to any new damage as Wipha’s remnants move southwest toward Vietnam.
