UK Unveils Strategy to Replace Animal Testing with AI and 3D Bioprinting

  • 11/11/2025

The UK has announced a detailed roadmap to eliminate animal testing in scientific research through advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and 3D bioprinting. Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallance unveiled the strategy that aims to replace animal experiments used for product safety testing while maintaining human safety standards.

The plan sets specific timelines for phasing out various animal tests:

  • Regulatory testing for skin and eye irritation will end by 2026
  • Botox potency tests on mice will cease by 2027
  • Pharmacokinetic studies on dogs and primates will significantly reduce by 2030

The government will provide new funding and streamline regulatory processes to accelerate adoption of these alternative methods. Officials emphasized that animal testing will only be replaced when alternative methods prove equally reliable. The initiative has been welcomed by animal welfare groups as a significant step toward ethical, technology-driven research that benefits both science and animal welfare.
