Bahrain to Pilot Palm Scan Payment System Inspired by China’s Success

Manama: Bahrain could soon become one of the first countries in the region to trial a futuristic payment method that lets people pay by simply scanning their hand — no card or mobile phone needed.

The Strategic Thinking Parliamentary Bloc has formally submitted a proposal to study the ‘palm scan payment’ system in detail. The proposal, presented by Ahmed Al Saloum — Chairman of Parliament’s Economic and Financial Affairs Committee — has been forwarded to Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam and is now under legislative review.

The plan will be assessed further by Al Saloum’s committee in close coordination with the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), Benefit Company, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and the Bahrain Chamber.

Palm scan payment technology uses advanced biometrics, including infrared cameras, to identify fingerprints and unique vein patterns within the user’s palm. This cutting-edge payment method, which gained massive popularity in China thanks to companies like Tencent, is now widely used in convenience stores, subways, and service centers there.

Supporters highlight its security and convenience, as it allows transactions without carrying cards or mobile phones. Bahrain’s pilot project aims to test the system’s suitability and security within the country’s financial and retail ecosystem.

If approved, Bahrain would join a growing list of countries exploring contactless biometric payment systems, marking a significant step forward in innovative digital finance and customer convenience.
