Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Qatar has intensified efforts to control the growing population of invasive myna birds, which pose a threat to local ecosystems and agriculture. In the first four months of this year alone, authorities captured 5,936 mynas by setting up hundreds of traps across the country.
Compared to last year’s 150 traps in 16 locations, this year 540 traps have been strategically installed in 33 locations known for high myna activity. Monthly data shows a consistent capture rate, with 1,512 birds caught in January, 350 in February, 1,461 in March, and 1,613 in April.
These mynas, originally from countries including India, are known to disrupt the ecological balance by harming native bird species and damaging crops. Special cages have been designed to safely hold the captured birds, as Qatar steps up its scientific and planned approach to wildlife management.
