Kuwait: Municipal Council member Dr. Hassan Kamal has urged Minister of Public Works Dr. Noura Al-Mishaan to accelerate the rollout of the long-awaited Kuwait Metro project and other vital public transportation initiatives.
Dr. Kamal stressed that rapid population growth, an increasing number of vehicles, and ongoing urban expansion have intensified traffic congestion, creating wide-ranging economic, social, environmental, and urban challenges. He emphasized that while expanding highways is costly and limited in effectiveness, developing reliable mass transit systems is a more sustainable solution to Kuwait’s mounting traffic woes.
He pointed out that the groundwork for the Kuwait Metro began back in 2011, when the Ministry of Communications gave initial approval for the master public transport plan. By 2014, oversight was transferred to the Public Authority for Roads and Land Transport. However, multiple proposals from different government bodies have since been dismissed due to conflicts with the predetermined Metro route.
Highlighting the need to connect new residential and labor housing cities with existing urban areas, Dr. Kamal called for prioritizing comprehensive public transport solutions that align with Kuwait’s fourth master plan, which projects the population will exceed 7 million by 2040.
He urged authorities to adopt clear strategies, well-defined timelines, and detailed budgets for these projects, integrating them into the government’s upcoming action plans to ensure timely execution and long-term benefits for the nation’s development goals.
