Manama: Bahrain has secured a seat on the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2026–2027 term. The election took place during the UN General Assembly session, where Bahrain was chosen alongside Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Latvia, and Liberia.

The newly elected members will begin their two-year term on January 1, 2026. The UN Security Council, which comprises 15 members, includes five permanent members—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and ten non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly.

Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani expressed gratitude to the UN and member states for their support and reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to the UN’s mission of promoting international peace and security.

Bahrain’s election is seen as a significant achievement and recognition of the Gulf region's role in global diplomacy. The selection process requires a two-thirds majority vote from the 193-member General Assembly, with seats allocated based on regional representation.
