Dubai: In a strategic move to tackle traffic congestion and improve urban mobility, Dubai has begun the renovation of 57 roads as part of a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade plan. Supervised by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the project is spearheaded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and is set for completion by 2027.
The plan is aligned with Dubai’s vision to accommodate an estimated population of 8 million by 2040. The upgrades include 226 kilometers of new roads and the construction of 115 bridges and tunnels. These developments aim to cut travel times by over 75 percent and improve connectivity across key traffic corridors.
One of the major projects is the 16-kilometer Umm Suqeim-Al Qudra corridor, which features 7,000 meters of bridges and tunnels and is expected to reduce travel time from 46 minutes to just 11 minutes, benefiting over 1 million residents.
Another significant development is the renovation of Hessa Street, which will include 9,000 meters of bridges at four key intersections. The road’s capacity will double from 4,000 to 8,000 vehicles per hour, reducing travel time from 30 minutes to 7 minutes.
Improvements are also being made on Sheikh Zayed Road, where seven quick-win traffic initiatives implemented between January and April 2025 have already decreased congestion by 5 to 10 percent.
Dubai’s ongoing road renovation reflects a strong commitment to building a smarter, faster, and more efficient transportation network for its residents and future population growth.
