Saudi Arabia to Partially Lift Alcohol Ban Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2034

Riyadh, May 26: In a landmark policy shift, Saudi Arabia has announced it will partially lift its alcohol ban in 2026, ending a prohibition that has been in place since 1952. The change is part of the kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategy and preparations to host major events like Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup in 2034.

Alcohol will be served exclusively in high-end venues such as luxury hotels, resorts, and designated tourist destinations including Neom, Sindalah Island, and the Red Sea Project. Around 600 locations will be licensed to serve beer, wine, and cider, though stronger spirits will remain banned. The sale of alcohol in public areas, homes, and retail outlets will still be prohibited, and home brewing will remain illegal.

The new policy includes strict licensing rules, staff certification, and close government oversight to ensure responsible consumption aligned with Saudi cultural values. Authorities emphasized that violations will be penalized. The move is expected to attract international tourists, increase foreign investments, and create job opportunities, as global hotel chains begin preparations for the anticipated influx of visitors.
