A Dubai court has sentenced two African nationals — a young man and a woman — to seven years in prison and imposed a fine of Dh200,000 after they were found guilty of attempting to smuggle and distribute 1,200 drug pills in the UAE. The Dubai Court of First Instance also ordered their deportation after they serve their sentences.

The incident occurred at Dubai International Airport, where customs officials became suspicious of the unusual weight of the young man's bag. Upon inspection, pills containing narcotic substances were discovered. The man initially denied possession of any illegal items, but the subsequent search revealed otherwise.

The Dubai Police were notified, and the man was taken into custody. During interrogation, he confessed that the bag was handed to him by someone in his home country and that he was supposed to pass it to a woman at the airport. He presented WhatsApp messages as evidence of his communication with her.

Based on this lead, the woman was also arrested at the airport. She claimed the bag was for her brother but denied knowledge of its contents. Forensic analysis confirmed the pills were controlled substances under the UAE’s anti-narcotics law.

The court found both individuals guilty of possessing drugs with the intent to import and distribute, highlighting the UAE's strict stance on drug-related offenses.
