Abu Dhabi Sees Tourist Surge with Etihad Stopover Program

  • 04/05/2025

Abu Dhabi is experiencing a significant increase in tourist arrivals, thanks to the growing popularity of the stopover program jointly launched by Etihad Airways and the Abu Dhabi Department of Tourism. The initiative, which allows transit passengers to explore Abu Dhabi before continuing their journeys, has become a major hit among international travelers.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, Abu Dhabi welcomed 1.4 million passengers, with 44,000 of them arriving through the stopover program. This represents a 76% rise compared to the same period last year. Etihad Airways anticipates handling approximately 1.5 million stopover passengers by the end of 2025.

The stopover program has shown remarkable growth over the years — from just 12,000 travelers in 2023 to 85,000 in 2024, and even higher numbers expected this year. The initiative is especially popular among tourists from the United States, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, India, Japan, and South Korea.

According to Salih Mohammed Al Ghaziri, Director-General of Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, the success of the program is the result of strategic, data-driven marketing, diverse cultural programming, and a focus on preserving Abu Dhabi’s identity. He emphasized that the program not only enhances the visitor experience but also helps strengthen global partnerships and expand the emirate’s reach.

The stopover program invites travelers transiting through Abu Dhabi International Airport to disembark, enjoy a short stay, and explore the city’s attractions before continuing their journey with Etihad Airways. This approach is rapidly transforming Abu Dhabi into a must-visit destination for global travelers.
