Kuwait Braces for Cold Snap with Heavy Rain, Strong Winds; Temperatures to Drop to 5°C

Kuwait is experiencing unstable weather as a cold air mass and upper-level low-pressure system move across the country, bringing scattered thunderstorms and a significant drop in temperatures. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is expected in southern and coastal areas through early Friday morning, accompanied by active northwesterly winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h. These conditions will lead to rough sea conditions with waves as high as 7 feet, prompting caution for maritime activities.

Acting Director Dharar Al-Ali stated that Thursday’s weather will be cool and partly to mostly cloudy, with maximum temperatures between 13°C and 15°C. Thunderstorms may intensify in southern and coastal regions, with moderate to rough seas. Thursday night is forecast to be unstable with stronger winds (up to 65 km/h) and a continued chance of heavy thunderstorms, while minimum temperatures dip to 8–10°C.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve on Friday, with rain decreasing but cool to cold weather persisting. Strong northwesterly winds of 20–60 km/h may stir dust, and daytime highs will range from 16°C to 18°C. By Saturday, temperatures will drop further, with nighttime lows between 5°C and 7°C—marking some of the coldest conditions so far this season. Winds will lighten over the weekend, though seas will remain moderate.

Separately, the Al-Ujairi Scientific Center announced that Sunday, December 21, 2025, will mark the start of the Islamic month of Rajab 1447 AH. That same day will also see the winter solstice—the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere—with sunrise at 6:38 AM and sunset at 4:54 PM local time. The solstice astronomically signals the beginning of winter, after which daylight hours will gradually increase.
