Dubai: Dubai Police have disclosed alarming statistics highlighting the dangers of illegal road crossing (jaywalking) and reckless use of scooters in the emirate. Between January and May this year, these unsafe practices led to 13 fatalities and numerous injuries.
According to police data, there were 254 e-scooter-related incidents in 2024 alone, resulting in 10 deaths and injuries to 259 people — 17 of them seriously hurt.
In response, authorities issued 28,027 fines for jaywalking and seized 15,029 scooters during the first five months of this year, underscoring the urgency of curbing unsafe behaviors on the roads.
Police officials also raised concerns about the increasing number of minors riding electric bikes and scooters without licenses and proper supervision. In February alone, two fatal scooter accidents occurred within three days, involving underage riders aged just 9 and 15.
Dubai Police stressed that illegal crossing remains one of the highest fined offenses, with jaywalkers facing penalties of AED 400. If the offense leads to an accident, offenders could face jail time and fines ranging from AED 5,000 to AED 10,000. For high-speed areas (80 km/h or more), illegal crossing can result in imprisonment of no less than three months and fines of at least AED 10,000.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations at Dubai Police, emphasized the ongoing collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to conduct awareness and education campaigns, particularly targeting youth and visitors in residential and commercial areas.
He urged the public to use pedestrian bridges and designated crossings and to strictly follow safety guidelines for e-scooter use to help save lives and improve traffic safety across the emirate.
