Kuwait Municipality Deploys Drones and Smart Tech to Monitor Desert and Urban Cleanliness

  • 24/08/2025

Kuwait’s Municipality is upgrading its cleaning contracts with 12 key innovations, including drones to monitor desert areas, agricultural holdings, and chalet zones, and 360-degree smart cameras on cleaning vehicles. Acting Director General Manal Al-Asfour announced these measures in response to municipal council inquiries, emphasizing improved oversight and efficiency in waste management. Garbage removal times are now standardized from 6 PM to 12 AM, with companies required to display these schedules on their vehicles to inform residents.

The reforms also introduce stricter enforcement mechanisms. Homeowners failing to adhere to waste disposal schedules face penalties under Ministerial Resolution No. 354 of 2023, while cleaning companies incur fines for negligence. Contracts, valid for five years and renewable, mandate specific workforce quotas—including vehicle operators, equipment handlers, and manual sweepers—who work eight-hour daily shifts.

Al-Asfour revealed that 19 tender agreements for public cleaning have been prepared by the Public Cleanliness Committee, in coordination with an environmental consultancy. These documents are undergoing legal review and will be submitted to the Ministry of Finance for approval and budget allocation, ensuring transparency and compliance.

Key upgrades in the new contracts include:

  • Larger 360-liter household containers (replacing 240L)
  • Standardized machinery specifications
  • Manual sweeper carts instead of containers
  • Specialized vehicles for sorted waste collection and container washing
  • Governorate-specific colors for vehicles, containers, and uniforms
  • Enhanced container designs to prevent gaps
  • Electrical mechanisms for historic areas like Mubarakiya
  • Advanced recycling containers and vehicle tracking systems

These measures aim to modernize Kuwait’s waste management infrastructure, leveraging technology and stricter protocols to ensure cleaner public spaces and environmental sustainability.
