Emirates International School Enforces Classroom Mobile Phone Ban

  • 23/08/2025

Emirates International School, owned by UAE billionaire Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor, has implemented a strict ban on mobile phone use in classrooms ahead of the new academic year. Students must hand over their phones to school authorities upon arrival and will only retrieve them after classes end. This policy aims to minimize distractions, promote discipline, and ensure undivided attention to studies.

The move reflects a growing trend in the UAE to regulate phone usage in educational settings. While some schools enforce partial restrictions, others impose complete bans. The government has previously mandated phone prohibitions to safeguard student safety and privacy, with repeated violations leading to confiscation until the academic year concludes.

Al Habtoor emphasized that education is a shared responsibility and called for all UAE schools to adopt similar measures. He stressed the importance of balancing technology with traditional learning, noting that the school will also place extra emphasis on Arabic language instruction this year to strengthen cultural identity.

Established in 1991 under the Al Habtoor Group’s community initiatives, Emirates International School operates branches in Jumeirah and The Meadows. The phone ban underscores its commitment to fostering a focused, technology-conscious learning environment while preparing students to integrate knowledge with ethical digital practices.
