Philippines Increases Minimum Wage for Overseas Domestic Workers to $500 Monthly

  • 22/08/2025

The Philippines government has announced a $100 increase in the minimum monthly wage for its overseas domestic workers, raising the standard from $400 to $500. This adjustment, applied globally, aims to address rising living costs, inflation, and evolving labor relations. The move reflects the Philippines’ commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens working abroad.

According to Bassam Al-Shammari, a domestic worker affairs specialist, the change will result in an approximate 20 Kuwaiti dinar increase for workers in Kuwait. He emphasized that the wage hike is not country-specific but targets all Filipino domestic workers worldwide, responding to heightened demand for their services and broader economic pressures.

The Philippine Department of Overseas Filipino Workers also issued new guidelines requiring annual medical checkups for workers, initially voluntary in the first year. Host employers must provide necessary healthcare and ensure safe, habitable housing with proper ventilation, sanitation, and lighting, reinforcing standards for dignity and well-being.

This wage revision underscores the Philippines’ proactive stance in promoting fair labor practices and worker protection internationally. By aligning salaries with global economic realities and enforcing health and safety protocols, the government aims to enhance the competitiveness and welfare of Filipino domestic workers in the global market.
