Abu Dhabi Pioneers Newborn Genome Screening to Detect 800+ Genetic Disorders

  • 18/08/2025

Abu Dhabi has launched a first-of-its-kind Newborn Genetic Screening Program, leveraging whole genome sequencing to detect over 815 treatable genetic conditions in infants. Spearheaded by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), this initiative aligns with the Emirati Genome Council's vision for precision medicine, enabling early diagnosis and intervention for metabolic disorders, immunodeficiencies, and rare diseases like spinal muscular atrophy. The program is initially available at Kanad Hospital and Danat Al Emarat Hospital, with plans to expand across all maternity facilities in the emirate.

The screening involves collecting cord blood samples at birth (with parental consent) to identify latent genetic risks that may not manifest immediately. Results are delivered within 21 days, followed by genetic counseling and specialist referrals if needed. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, emphasized that this proactive approach—detecting conditions before symptoms appear—positions Abu Dhabi as a global leader in preventive healthcare. The program prioritizes UAE nationals and children of Emirati mothers, with gene therapy options available for certain conditions.

To ensure seamless implementation, DoH conducted training workshops for pediatricians, neonatologists, and maternity staff across three hospitals, focusing on genetic counseling protocols and patient communication. Collaborating with M42, the emirate is integrating genomics into its preventive healthcare infrastructure, moving away from reactive treatments toward personalized, data-driven medicine. Dr. Mohamed Al Ameri of DoH noted this marks a shift from "one-size-fits-all" healthcare to tailored solutions that improve long-term outcomes.

This initiative complements Abu Dhabi’s broader genomics strategy, including premarital screening and the Emirati Genome Program, aimed at reducing hereditary diseases. By equipping families with actionable health insights, the emirate is setting a new global benchmark for neonatal care—where advanced genomics, early intervention, and multidisciplinary support converge to safeguard future generations. The program underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to innovation-driven healthcare that prioritizes wellness over treatment.
