Guinness World Records has officially confirmed that Nigerian chef Hilda Baci has cooked the largest pot of jollof rice ever, a colossal dish weighing 8,780 kilograms.
The record attempt in Lagos was a dramatic affair. During the nine-hour cook, the custom-made steel pot, built by 300 workers over two months, collapsed twice while being weighed by a crane. Despite these setbacks, no rice was lost, and the attempt prevailed.
The ingredients were as monumental as the achievement, requiring:
4,000 kg of rice
500 cartons of tomato paste
600 kg of onions
168 kg of goat meat
Baci, assisted by a team of ten chefs, stated the feat was a testament to teamwork and national pride, symbolizing unity and the deep cultural significance of jollof rice in West Africa. Thousands of spectators witnessed the event and were later served portions of the historic meal.
This victory adds to Baci's profile as a record-breaking chef, having previously held the title for the longest cooking marathon in 2023. It solidifies her role in using food to unite communities and celebrate African culinary heritage on a global stage.
