Pakistan Floods Kill 320+ as Rescue Teams Struggle Amid Washed-Out Roads

Islamabad: The death toll from relentless monsoon rains and flash floods in northern Pakistan has climbed to at least 321 within the last 48 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed.

The hardest-hit region is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where 307 lives were lost. Nine deaths were reported in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, while Gilgit-Baltistan recorded five fatalities. At least 21 others have been injured.

According to officials, most victims died when flash floods swept through villages or houses collapsed under heavy rains. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned of further downpours in the coming days, urging residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions.

The provincial government has declared Buner, Bajaur, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, and Battagram as disaster-hit districts. Around 2,000 rescue workers are deployed across nine districts to recover bodies, evacuate survivors, and deliver aid.

However, rescue operations remain extremely difficult. Washed-out roads and landslides have blocked access, preventing ambulances and heavy machinery from reaching stranded communities. In many areas, teams are forced to travel on foot to reach cut-off villages.

“Heavy rainfall and landslides are causing immense challenges, especially in transporting equipment and ambulances,” said Bilal Ahmed Faizi, spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rescue agency.

Despite evacuation appeals, officials said many residents refuse to leave, staying close to relatives still trapped under debris.
