OpenAI Launches GPT-5, Touting PhD-Level Expertise and Major AI Breakthroughs

San Francisco: OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, the latest version of its ChatGPT model, promoting it as a powerful leap in artificial intelligence with PhD-level reasoning and fewer errors. CEO Sam Altman called it “smarter, faster, and more useful,” noting the model’s ability to handle complex logic, produce software, and offer human-like responses.

Altman likened the model’s intelligence to that of a domain expert, stating, “GPT-5 is the first time it really feels like talking to a PhD-level expert in any topic.”

The rollout began on August 7 and includes improvements in accuracy, transparency, and reasoning. GPT-5 reduces hallucinations—instances where AI generates false information—and features new safeguards to avoid deceptive or overly emotional interactions.

The release comes amid growing industry competition. Elon Musk’s Grok AI claims to outperform all rivals, while rival company Anthropic recently blocked OpenAI’s API access over alleged misuse of its tools. OpenAI defended its benchmarking practices, calling Anthropic’s decision “disappointing.”

Alongside the launch, OpenAI announced updates to ChatGPT’s interaction guidelines. In response to criticism of emotionally manipulative responses in past updates, the chatbot will now avoid giving definitive answers to personal life decisions, such as breakups, focusing instead on balanced guidance.

Experts have expressed both excitement and caution. Some warn against overstating AI capabilities, emphasizing the need for regulation as these tools become more influential. “The need for comprehensive regulation becomes even more urgent,” said Gaia Marcus of the Ada Lovelace Institute.

GPT-5 will also offer a free access tier, signaling a shift towards broader availability. As the rollout continues, users and experts alike are watching closely to see if GPT-5 lives up to its groundbreaking promises.
