Asia is facing an escalating climate emergency, with extreme weather events sweeping across the region. From deadly floods in China to record-breaking heat in Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam, countries are grappling with the worsening effects of climate change.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Asia is warming at nearly double the global rate, resulting in more frequent and severe natural disasters. In China, torrential rains have led to deadly flash floods and landslides, severely affecting cities like Beijing and Guangdong.
Japan recently recorded its highest-ever temperature—41.8°C in Isesaki—while experiencing its hottest June and July on record. Meanwhile, South Korea faced an unprecedented 22 tropical nights in a row, triggering a spike in heat-related illnesses.
Other nations, including Vietnam, India, Pakistan, and Hong Kong, are also experiencing dangerous heat and rainfall extremes. Pakistan reported almost 300 rain-related deaths since June, while Uttarakhand, India, saw flash floods leave over 100 people missing.
With $2 trillion in economic losses linked to extreme weather in the past three decades, scientists are urging immediate action to combat climate change and protect vulnerable communities across the region.
