Muscat: The Ministry of Tourism and Heritage in Oman has issued a strong reminder to tourists and visitors to dress modestly and observe local customs, especially when visiting villages, nature reserves, off-road locations, and cultural landmarks. The ministry emphasized that dressing modestly reflects respect for Oman’s deeply rooted traditions and cultural values.
Visitors, both men and women, are expected to wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. The ministry also highlighted other aspects of respectful behavior, including keeping noise levels low, asking permission before photographing people, and avoiding entry into private areas. These guidelines are not just recommendations but are also backed by law.
According to Article 294a of Oman’s Penal Code, anyone who appears in public in a way that violates public decency or cultural norms may face one to three months in prison and fines ranging from OMR 100 to OMR 300. The law also protects the livelihoods of villagers by prohibiting tourists from disturbing wildlife, picking crops, or polluting water sources that are vital for local communities.
For those exploring Oman’s off-road and remote areas, the ministry advises using 4WD vehicles and taking safety precautions such as traveling in groups, carrying GPS trackers, spare tires, water, food, and fuel.
Ahmed Al Hatmi, a local from Rustaq, shared, “When we travel abroad, we respect other countries’ customs and laws. We expect the same respect from visitors coming to our villages.”
To spread awareness, the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage is setting up information counters and distributing educational materials at Muscat International Airport and major tourist spots. At the same time, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) is actively monitoring beaches, parks, and public spaces to ensure compliance and will take legal action against violators.
This initiative reflects Oman’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity while promoting a respectful and safe tourism experience for all.
