World's Largest Airport Underway in Dubai – Al Maktoum Airport Expansion Begins

Dubai has officially begun the construction of what is set to be the world’s largest airport — Al Maktoum International Airport. The chairman of Dubai Airports and president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that major contracts have been awarded and construction is now underway on this monumental project.

Approved by UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the airport is expected to completely replace Dubai International Airport within the next ten years. The newly expanded Al Maktoum Airport will feature five parallel runways, 400 gates, and span over 70 square kilometers. Once completed, it will handle up to 260 million passengers annually — five times the capacity of the current Dubai International Airport.

The ambitious $35 billion terminal project is scheduled to be completed by 2033. It will also incorporate an advanced domestic transport system, including an underground train network to support smooth passenger flow. This development aims to significantly enhance Dubai’s position as a global aviation hub.

Currently, Dubai International Airport uses Automated People Movers (APMs) to transport passengers between terminals, with limited seating for the elderly, women, and children. The new infrastructure at Al Maktoum is expected to offer upgraded and expansive facilities that will set new benchmarks for global air travel.
